Drills (Meetings) |
The Romans once had a saying, "Their drills were bloodless battles, and their battles were bloody drills..."
Well, we try to avoid the whole blood thing, and hopefully the battles too. But we do conduct drills to
improve ourselves and develop our skills. Our regularly scheduled weekly mandatory meetings are called "Stated Drills" and they occur one day each week and once every month. Stated Weekly Drills are every Thursday after school, and we send out a Plan-of-the-Day in advance via ParentSquare. This lets students and families know what is scheduled in a given week, which uniform to wear, and what to expect for training. Weekly stated drills start promptly at 1455 on Thursday afternoons and typically dismiss around 1730. Stated Monthly Drills meet one Saturday or other special day per month, and typically start at 0800. The dismissal times will vary depending on what activities are scheduled --At least that is the plan. Sometimes our stated drill will shift to a non-Saturday due to facility scheduling or factors outside our control, but we will notify cadets when this happens and give grace if families are unable to make arrangements for attendance. We don't meet regularly over the winter and summer vacations, and long holidays mess with our schedule too. This is why we pack so much in during the school year so even though we over do the monthly meeting requirements, we use that banked time to cover the down times. The devil is in the details -as the old saying goes... Drill Policy Sea Cadet regulations require all units to conduct 40 "drills" per year. That policy also requires that units hold at least four drills per month, and each drill is to be 3 hours, and most units accomplish this by drilling over one full weekend per month to get the hours all knocked out in a single go. Wolf Squadron must be creative to complete the time requirement, and our district has made some special arrangements outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the School District and the Sea Cadets national organization. Cadets are required to attend regularly scheduled drills |
